Tigris, a catalogue for artist Lucien Smith’s show of the same name, was at Skarstedt Gallery in New York. The publication explores the artist’s studio practice and process in large detailed black-and-white photographs. An essay by David Rimanelli precedes the plate section. While the artist has been described as a grandchild of Warhol, who began to use camouflage designs for his paintings in the late 80s, Japanese sumi-e ink painting and Hokusai’s famous The Great Wave at Kanagawa also inspire Smith’s large-scale paintings. Brimming with layers of art history and classical references the works transcend disguise.
