Evoking vintage textiles

Alexander Girard was a textile and furniture pioneer of mid-century design. Goto Design visited his work over a decade ago in the art direction and design of Petit Glam’s No. 7: Modern Crafts issue. Girard was one of the featured artists. An original Girard design was reinterpreted on the cloth-covered materials that accompanied the issue. Sarah Crowner’s recent exhibition ‘The Wave’ at Nicelle Beauchene also revisits Girard. Presenting mostly acrylic-and-sewn-canvas paintings arrayed around a floor of glazed terra cotta tiles, two of her canvases directly quote him. While Crowner continues to question what even constitutes a painting she is also integrating different periods of 20th-century design in her work.
